Most Beautiful Woman (In Husband's Eyes, At Least)

I saw this video featured in ANC. It made me blush and smitten! Here's a guy who was in a daze after a surgery and was not able to recognize his wife. Watch what he said:

Isn't this the sweetest?! The last part was funny. He asked his wife to turn around. Haha! Looking for that booty?!

I remember one of the silly conversations, via sms, that hubby and I had. Here it is.

Gaah! Who wouldn't get a swollen head even for a minute with this? *kilig*

The Miracle Boy

My in-laws stayed with us for nine days for a vacation, hubby's parents and his three siblings. While these past days it has been hot with some overcast clouds the week they were here the weather was just crazy. There were times it was raining hard with thunderstorms! Luckily, the day they were in Universal Studios it was just cloudy and it didn't rain at all.
They are a family that exudes happiness and joy! I am proud to say that my in-laws are a family of only trying to be a blessing to others. They would try not to do anything that would make you feel uncomfortable. They are even very expressive on their endearments with each other. There are lots of hugs and kisses whenever they are together. Specially if it's towards the youngest.
The youngest has been dubbed as the miracle boy. You wouldn't believe that once he stayed in the hospital for two months with one month in a coma in the ICU. He contracted dengue but when the day he was supposed to check out from the hospital that's when he suffered from a deadly virus causing him to be in coma.

For days and weeks he was in ICU every second counts and every cent is valuable. Almost every minute or hour his vital signs are being checked. Every two hours or so he had to take strong antibiotics costing between 1.5k to 3k. Fresh blood were also transfused to ensure his platelets are in normal levels.

I once went inside the ICU with MIL and I couldn't bear it. I was crying the whole time because he was so thin and has to be in life-support. I went out even before the time to visit was up and never dared to go inside again. All I can do was pray for him and the rest of the family.

He was finally sent home after two months and a sky-rocket hospital bill. His left brain was affected due to comatose but after several therapies all that is left now is his deep voice, he used to sing beautifully, his hands without full control and his balance.

All through that phase in their lives, the family never gave up. When the doctors would give a bad news everybody would take it as it is, take the best option and would eventually leave everything to God to work on. No one showed any sign of weakness. A hug from each other was enough to say that 'we will all get through this'. And it did! God worked in ways none of us where able to comprehend. He sent a message through a fellow boy, who was also in the hospital at that time, that hubby's youngest brother would wake up soon. We held on to that. Knowing in all things God is at work. Strangers and friends would visit and pray over him. Monetary help came in without them even asking. It brought closer and tighter relationship within the family. They are able to say I love yous without cringing which some would often take for granted.

He is indeed a miracle boy for me. Now, at 19, he is living his life. He has more friends than ever. He sings louder than he should. He dances even without music because he is happy. Whenever I see him, he reminds me with one passage in the bible, 'with God all things are possible - Mat 19:25-27'. That no matter how bad things may seem everything will come out good in the end. If it is not good then it is not yet the end. God is forever faithful to His promise that He has plans for us. Plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future - Jer 29:11.

Burkina Faso

I was going through my SPAM mails. There are times I would open the mail because I might be missing some which aren't supposed to be in the spam folder. I'm used to receiving emails which are obviously scam mails but this particular one had me reading it through the entire 407 words.

Here's the script:

Dear friend,

With all due respect, I am Mr Mahrous Haider., director of the audit section of African Development Bank, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in West Africa. I am contacting you based on the fact that your profile was good and commendable. This message might meet you in utmost surprise, please forgive my intrusion into your privacy, however, it was due to the urgency implied and the need for a foreign partner that made me contact you today for a business transaction.

When auditing abandoned and outstanding accounts of the bank, I discover the secret file of one of our late customers, who was involved in a plane crash while on a trip along with his entire family on 31 July 2007 and they all lost there lives. He lodged some money into this bank either for personal use or for business of which we could not disclose, the said amount was US$3.5M (Three Million, Five Hundred Thousand USA Dollars). Since then we have made several inquiries to locate any of our customer's extended relatives, but our several attempts was unsuccessful as he neither left a Will nor any next of kin to this fund.

After these several frantic searches proved unsuccessful, I personally decided to contact you and to seek your consent to assist me and apply to the bank as the next of kin to the fund, so that the proceeds of his account can be paid to you for our benefit. As a foreigner, you stand a better position to apply through documentation as the next of kin to the fund since the deceased is also a foreigner. I can not do this deal alone as a citizen of Burkina Faso.

I have the opportunity of transferring this left over as I am the director of the Audit section of the bank, all I require from you is your honest co-operation to enable us see this transaction through and if only you will give me a full assurance that you can handle this business, then forward to me immediately the bellow information.

If you agree to my business proposal and on receipt of your prompt and positive response, further details and modalities for the transfer will be forwarded to you.You can write me on my personal e-mail address  (

Your name..................
Your age...................
Your occupation............
Your country...............
Your  passport.............
Your telephone number......
Your sex...................
marital status.............
Your home address..........

with best regards,
Mr Mahrous Haider.

I wonder if there's someone actually being lured by this? What kind of law would allow to transfer any asset, in this case an enormous sum of money, by just being considered the next possible 'kin' and by providing some information only and without any documents for proof? How can an email be truthful with this kind of sender address, goodnewssssssss58@msn.com? And where in the world did he get the profile he was talking about that I am commendable? If this thing is too good to be true, then it sure is!

I am glad Google have tracked this kind of email and provided a warning and precaution:
So, guys be careful!
This email has given me more than a good laugh. It has introduced me to Burkina Faso, Africa which I didn't know exists until now.

Burkina Faso is a land-locked area located at the Western part of Africa. It is a little smaller than the Philippines with 274,200 sq km. Having just 15.75M population with more than half are Muslim and the other percentage is composed of Christian denomination, traditional indigenous beliefs and others.

Traditional Dinian house. Isn't this cool!

100

I remember the movie, 100, of Mylene Dizon and Eugene Domingo. Mylene is stricken with cancer and have only three months to live. She decided to do 100 things before she dies. 100 food to eat, 100 places to go and 100 personal things to do. This is a movie that inspires us to go out more, live a life you really want and to love all that is in you. What struck me most is how Mylene prepared for her funeral. Some of us are unable to categorically say how we want our funeral would be. I have gone to one with karaoke where the visitors can sing all the songs they want. Yup, even disco and rock. I have seen also the one with live band and even stand-up comedians.

When I was in high school, father and I walked past a funeral wake on my way to school. We were both sad by the scene where the dead was being used by others to gamble in the open. So I said that when I die I want my wake to be three days only. No more, no less. And, with a purple coffin. That freaked out my father. Telling me not to talk about those things. And, that was enough to make me laugh.

Not that I have a death wish but, I think we should have a say on our wake. Mylene, prepared everything. From the songs, to the dress she'd wear and even to the AVP that is going to be played at the last night of the wake. I forgot if she also mentioned who are going to give the eulogy.

Now, I want that. Aside from buying a Life Plan, I have actually started compiling the songs that are going to be played for three days. During the night, I want it to be thematic. Each night will have a theme, one night would be rock ballad with a little bit of alternative music, second has to be ballad and love songs, the third, the final night has to be rhythm and blues! No AVP whatsoever! Just pure music. Or, maybe I could rent a jukebox? That would be cool! For the food, the first two nights should be just ordinary food but for the last night, all my favorites! Italian dishes, rice cakes, dark choc fondue and others. For what I am going to wear? I have to decide yet. I am torn between a Greek inspired and ala Jackie O outfits.

Is this post already giving you the creeps? Well, I still have one last item on the list. No eulogy. If ever it is just going to be my husband. I feel like eulogy is a waste of time because you're honoring someone who is unfortunately will not be able to hear and appreciate it. This is just for me and I am nothing against those who do this. I know that eulogy is important because it affirms and honors the goodness of the person. But, for me, I would rather hear it now, while I am alive and still able to comprehend.

Morbid? I think not. Death is certain and we would all come to meet him sooner or later. We can just hope and pray that it will be peaceful and with dignity. But, we can prepare for it. More than what we want our wake or funeral to be, we need to do things that would leave good and happy feelings or thoughts to the people to remember us by. A legacy. An inspiration. Most of all LOVE. So that when we come face to face with him we can be ready without fear. And as we meet our Creator, we can have a wonderful gift for Him, a life well lived.

Lola Ruby

I am hooked at TLC of Discovery Channel. TLC stands for The Learning Channel which is originally focused to educational shows but has expanded to travel, food and the extreme. I love their shows about travel and food. Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, Cake Boss, Man vs Food, Nigella's Kitchen and the Extreme. Extreme features the extreme on lifestyle, travel and food.

I was watching Extreme: Las Vegas yesterday and they featured the extreme rides in Stratosphere hotel.
One of the rides that they said was the extreme of all the extreme was the Big Shot. Strapped on their seats the ride will shot you up and down to a stomach-wrenching 160-feet ride in the air with a 72kph! Some men are having doubts if they are going to make it good. But, not Lola Ruby. She is one tough 72-year old granny that was rightfully given the name of 'The Big Shot's Big Shot!'. She has been in the record books for blasting off the big shot 8,000 times! Man, some guts! The scariest thing I have ridden was the Space Shuttle and twice of it is already too much for me!

Watch the video at 4:50.

Do you think if Lola Ruby was able to make it, you, too, can make it? As for me, I'd just be glad to take some pictures from the Startosphere platform.

Making Your Money Work

On my flight back here in SG I overheard my fellow Pinoys talking about looking for other means to earn aside from the fixed income or salary that they get from their jobs. I politely asked them if I could say something about it because not telling what I know is like a disservice on helping others even a little on financial literacy. I mentioned to them about mutual funds which could be another option to savings.

I guess many of us have savings or even time deposits in a bank. We are all aware of how little the interests are. It would be luck if we'd get 2% per annum. I myself have an account which gives me about 500 pesos interest but deducts a hundred due to tax. Funny isn't it? Almost insane. That's why hubby and I diversified our money and invested it in mutual funds.

What is mutual funds? In how I understand it, it is a pool of money from people which the fund manager or financial expert invests it to bonds, stocks, money markets, treasury bonds, and others. Basically, you entrust your money to the company and hoping that it would earn interest as the market performs.

I have invested in AXA Honeypot in 2008. AXA Honeypot is a Lump Sum mutual fund where in you invest a certain amount of money up front and looks into a 3 to 5 years investment. I am so glad that even without doing anything, despite the financial crisis the past years, my money has earned me about 50% to date! You can never have that in any bank. Back then I was a little apprehensive of letting go of that money thinking that AXA might also close down like other investing or insurance company. But, since it has partnership with Metrobank I took the big risk.

When we have seen how I could make my money work for us, hubby and I looked for other mutual fund companies. We now have Philam Strategic Growth Fund, PhilEquity Fund and the latest, FAMI - First Metro Asset Management, Inc.

It is not really hard to understand mutual funds and there are a lot of sites where you can learn the benefit of investing in mutual funds. If you have your regular job and stock trading is not for you then this is the best option you can get. You can have professional management of your hard earned money. So, you can go about your day without having to check on the stocks/bonds/market performance or the financial news.

Now, you shouldn't get so excited and rush to invest all your hard earned money. One of the major thing before investing is knowing yourself. Ask yourself how much are you willing to pay yourself? Is lump sum investment for you or Peso Cost Averaging? How long are you willing to invest? 3 years? 5 years? or until you retire? You have to be specific. It is also important that you have an emergency fund before you put your money in the pot. This would help you feel more secured knowing you still have other pockets to dig into.

It is equally important to check on the company you want to entrust your money to. Study the performance of the company and the fund managers. It would be the best choice if the company have continuous positive performance for the last five years. Before we got into other mutual fund companies, I searched the 'top mutual funds in the Philippines'. Google gladly provided me with several blogs and official sites that lists the top mutual funds in the Philippines and the percent yields for the past 3 to 5 years. This is how I got to know about FAMI with Mr. Gus Cosio as the fund manager.

In our family of ten, only my brother and I are into this kind of investing. I am glad that before my parents left for work in Riyadh I was able to convince them to save up in mutual funds. I really hope all of us, and our children, would be able to open up an account in mutual funds to make money work faster. To not let all the money waste sleeping in the banks or worse spend them all without saving up for the future.

Loving Pixlr-O-Matic

I am loving the Pixlr-O-Matic! It's another option if you don't have an apple device and you can't use Instagram. It is an application where you can mimic the filter a real camera use to give nostalgic or black and white effect. There are a lot of borders and layers which you can use to add a different twist on your photos.

The application is available in iOS and android devices. It can also be part of your Facebook and Google Chrome application. All you have to do is download it in the Pixlr-O-Matic website here and you are ready to go. You can share it or save it on your PC.

I am also planning of printing some of the pictures I have worked on and get more creative in displaying them!

Removing Mildews/Molds On Your Leather Bags

I was surprised one day when I smelled something like a mold. It took me few days to find out that my bags were growing molds. The culprit was the one sling bag that got wet when hubby and I run through the rain. The other bags got it, too, like a disease.

So, here's how I got rid of it:

What you need:
1. damp cloth
2. blower
3. leather cleaner or mink oil
4. charcoal/dehumidifier

How to remove it:
1. Thoroughly clean the bag by removing all the mildews/molds and its traces using a damp cloth. Make sure that the leather doesn't end up wet as it can damage the leather.
2. Using a blower, completely dry the bag. Don't let it get too much heat. You can also air dry it in a place where there is sun but don't put it directly under the sun.
3.  Next is apply a generous amount of leather cleaner or mink oil. There are some cleaners that are specific to a type or color of the leather so make sure you check with the sales person if it suits the leather you'll be cleaning.
4. Let the bag sit in an open air for some time to dry and absorb the leather cleaner.
5. To keep the mildews/molds from growing back make sure that your room or storage area don't have too much moisture by putting humidifier or charcoal all over the place.

They are good as new!

After a week the molds haven't gone back! Now, I am happy!

To prevent mildews/molds, ensure that before you store your bags they are completely dry and not stored in a plastic. Ensure that the storage area has good air ventilation, not damp and has enough lighting. To minimize humidity or moisture, you can put some charcoal or humidifier in the place where you keep your bags.

2011 A Personal Review

2011, the year that was! I couldn't believe that it has already ended so fast while it just seems yesterday when I was excited to leave the corporate life and jump to Singapore to be a full-time wife. What a year indeed! Here are the things I love to recount for they are a testament that God in His awesomeness have blessed me more than I can hope for.

1. Finally, starting out a blog
2. Checking one out in the list of my dream destination, Seoul, Korea!
3. Successful triple bypass heart operation of my father at no cost. Praise, God!
4. Visiting and knowing my parent's life in Riyadh, KSA for a month
5. Knowing I can get pregnant after almost being one. Yey!
6. Meeting new friends both Pinoys and foreigners making my circle a United Colors of Benetton
7. Hubby finding a new job
8. Hubby having more time at home and with me!
9. No serious illness the whole year.
10. Learning how to cook simple yet good dishes
11. Eating healthy. Going semi-vegetarian and eating meat very occasionally
12. Finding old friends in FB and talking as if we've last met only yesterday
13. Being part of a wonderful community that is Couples for Christ
14. Friends visiting us here in Singapore
15. Settling in Singapore with hubby. Best decision, ever!

It is great to look back at what happend in the past year because it makes us appreciate more life despite all the challenges that came before us. This also inspires us to dream bigger and live bolder for the coming year ahead because we know we can be better than we were last year.

I am so excited for 2012. This is my year, Year of The Dragon! This is going to be great. I know. I believe.

May your year be great, too!

Things Lately Before Christmas

I have been procrastinating on blogging. Things caught up on me. Days before Christmas hubby and I were a little bit busy. Aside from the usual chores and stuff we had our nine-day evening mass or Simbang Gabi. And these are the things that happened lately:

1. Happy sweating it out with hon

2. Giving in to my ultimate guilty pleasure. Peppermint choco from Awfully Chocolate

Awfully Chocolate

3. It has been raining the past days and the plants were watered abundantly. After the rain, I was amazed at how lovely they were.

4. And, because of that, hubby bought a bonsai for us to tend.

5. Discovering new guilty pleasure! Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks' fried chicken chops

6. Decorating the center piece for our intimate Noche Buena

7. Completing the nine-day simbang gabi despite our very petty fight on the last night. Thank God for winning over us!

Things Lately

A lot of things have happened lately in our dear Philippines. From 'Put the Little Girl to Sleep' death threat, to KC-Piolo's not-so-surprising break up and now to Mo Twister's ala tele serye video confession that has gone viral  in seconds, trended the web and have been talked about more often than any more sensible issues. Well, while all these things are happening I had great things that come along lately.

Here are the not-so-random things:

1. Trying hard to be pretty for a day. Nyay!

2. Waffles late at night!
Udders Ice Cream, 87 Upper East Coast Road, SG

3. Finding Paton's Cappuccino Chocolate at half the price!

4. Traveling back in time with Soup Restaurant. I love their Chrysanthemum Tea.
Soup Restaurant, #02-141 Vivo City, SG

5. Going beyond my intelligent auto mode of my camera. Haha!

6. Goal setting for 2012! Hubby and I agreed that we'll set some goals for next year so as to have a clearer view of where we want to be and hopefully fulfill our dreams and desires. Right now, I am reflecting, reassessing what I want so that, when I look back, I would be able to say I have lived my life to the fullest!

Friends Along The Way...

I don't know what's up with me today. I feel like missing my friends and missing being a friend. Add to that seeing on FB my high school/college close friends whom I used to call my best friends are now BFF with somebody else. What's with this feeling?

I lost some buddies through the years. Some reasons I know. Some my fault. Some theirs. But, some are puzzling. Like, have I done something wrong without me knowing. Or have I done nothing to keep it up to this day?
'Some people are not meant to be with you forever...' is what they say but wouldn't it be great if all the people you have known since time immemorial remained with you as close as you were? Sadly, that's not how life works, isn't it? People grow and, yeah, the cliche, sometimes they grow apart. We realize that that is just as far as we can go in the journey together. We need to continue on spreading our wings and chase after our own adventures even if it means chasing it without each other.

After few moments of re-assessment. I realized that I still have friends who are with me despite everything. Real friends, not just the, 'oh hi' kind of one. Whom you are able to be who and what you are. When you pretend and try to be someone you are not, they know. They just know. They notice. They would then encourage you to be just the way you are. No icings or toppings. Then, at the end of the day they embrace you for all that you are!

I can only count my real friends with just one hand but, hey, they are hard to find! I am not choosy, they are just rare. Rare enough for me to work on giving my time and attention. Making sure that no matter how seldom we connect we nurture the relationship that we have. Pick up where we left off. Recount those happy and not-so-good moments. Share our dreams and aspirations. Most of all laugh even if it means via the emoticons.

God loves me! He gives me friends so I won't be pathetically stuck in the four corners of this room. And, I just love it!

Mila's Daydreams

Mommies! You are so going to love this:

I stumbled upon Adele Enerson's blog, Mila's Daydreams, and was in total awe at her amazing creativity of taking pictures while her daughter Mila is sleeping. She was on maternity leave and with nothing much to do while her adorable new born takes a nap, she brought out to life what she thought her baby is dreaming about. Sadly, she removed some of her baby pictures due to copyright infringement made by unscrupulous media and advertising companies. But, you'll enjoy some of Mila's daydreams and the mommy's blogs while the baby is having her nap. And, oh, she has a book titled "When My Baby Dreams", that would be available in 2012. Yay, for that!

Philippines Consistently at the Top

In the world's worst airport. Last October The Guide to Sleeping In Airports listed the NAIA Terminal 1 at the top of the list as the world's worst airport. Now, CNN GO included as one of the world's 10 most hated airports. The last time that Terminal 1 was rehabilitated was in 1981, imagine how long it has been since it had a touch up?
I wonder where they are taking the ridiculous travel tax and terminal fees? Each passenger have to pay about Php1,500 for travel tax and Php750 terminal fee. Imagine around Php2,500 for each 27 million passengers that traveled in 2010 and yet the service and facilities were a throw-out! The fees really have to go. The front desk officers are rude, things miraculously get 'lost', the toilets are filthy! You even have to use an improvised pail to flush the toilet! Urgh!! No decent chairs for you to relax while waiting for your flight. The concessions are very few. The airport officers are of no help even. You thought you're being helped by giving you a push cart and pushing it for you, only to find out that there's a fee. So, embarrassing! And the corruption is even worse at the Customs.

I don't remember ever paying a fee or whatever in other countries. Here in SG, if you are holding a long term pass, you don't have to line up at the immigration desk. The immigration desks are mostly for visiting foreigners. But, if you have a pass, all you have to do is flash your ID at the scanner, when the first door opens, you put your thumb at the biometric scanner, the second door opens and walah! You're out in a breeze!

Wait, I am not done yet. I also often fetch our parents whenever they come home from Riyadh. The waiting area outside the terminal would make you feel really pathetic. It is so hot and the only thing that comforts you is that there's a roof and few chairs which some are even dilapidated. When the passengers arrive, looking for them would make you feel dizzy because there are no more big bold letters where they could line up based on their surnames. So what we do is we get away with the guards to run towards the terminal so we'll be able to immediately see our parents.

After media hullabaloo, the government is, finally, looking into the rehabilitation and renovation of NAIA Terminal 1 and will be giving a Php1 billion budget by January 2012. Kevin Cobonpue, Budji Layug and Royal Pineda have done the pro-bono design which have been approved by the NAIA Board and DOTC Chair Manuel Roxas.

I really hope that this is the start of taking these issues seriously. We have been wanting to promote tourism in the Philippines but when the start and end of your travel is an airport-rage, you would think gazillion times to ever coming back. Because, honestly not all travelers are backpackers who find it exciting and adventurous to survive in a fist fight mode in the airport. It would also be great if the renovation would also include an easy access to the public transportation aside from taxi cabs. Which reminds me, these cabs charges so high that would pull your wits out if you aren't smart enough to ask first how much it would cost you to get to your destination. Hope they would get rid of corrupt and bribing employees and officers. Provide free wireless service in all areas, please, we are now in the 20th Century. Connect the three terminals via a tram or whatever means so it would be easier to transfer from one terminal to another in case you went to a wrong terminal by mistake.

Finally, let this improvement start as soon as possible and finish without delays. Manual V. Pangilinan of First Pacific Co. have expressed interest in bidding for the privatization of the airport. If this will make things better so be it but the netizens will be waiting.

The Legend of Angry Birds Characters

My friends call me a late bloomer. When their level is already 32-40 in Farmville, mine was only about 5. That has always been my case. Haha! When angry birds have long been famous and waned its popularity it is only now that I am playing the game. And this post from Heart-to-Heart Online made me smile because now I can totally relate with Angry Bird Games.

Detox Foot Patch, For Real?

Days ago we went to the Singapore Expo to check what's on sale. We squeezed ourselves to the crowded hallway of the venue and after some bumps here and there we're at the Mega Expo Sale of John Little. John Little is the oldest retailer merchandise store in Singapore established in 1845. It is part of the Robinsons Group of Stores.

Right after we enter the door we saw this section with products made out of bamboo charcoal. I got intrigued so we frisked through the items and the Detox Foot Patch caught my eye the most. I've read about detox foot patch several times but not this kind of patch, though.
priced at S$12.90

The patch promised to clear out the wastes and toxins of the body to promote good metabolism, relieve tension, fatigue and give you a good night sleep. It even claimed  to get rid of your underarm and foot odor.

To use it just put the patch at one foot or both feet for faster effect. The next morning it will turn dark as the toxins have been 'taken out' of your system. It will then become lighter as you continue to use the patch since the impurities of your body lessens. I had it put in hubby's foot (read, guinea pig.LOL)
The next morning this is the color of the patch. (Warning: this is gross!)
After the second night.
On the third night to answer our skepticism about this product, yes, I was skeptic but I bought it anyway, we made a test patch. One will be on hubby's foot the other just with water and out in the air. And this what happened the next day.
From the husband's foot.
With several drops of water.
Both patches have the same stickiness and color. So, WTH is the toxins being flushed out all about?! I should have known. What's inside the pad is charcoal so when moisture, as the case of the foot, comes in contact with it, the patch will automatically turn black.

I know when I was thinking of buying something tells me that this is too good to be true. And it is! For some who feels some good things about this product I think it just like some medicines that give a placebo effect. It is the belief you'd feel better that your body becomes better.

I think the worst part is this is a product misrepresentation. The customers are lured to believe that this thing can do this and that. The health organizations and trade industry should be more vigilant in controlling these kind of products to protect the consumers. Now, our S$12 had gone to waste. Bummer!
